Position Summary:
We are currently seeking a Junior Mechanical Engineer to join our multi-discipline team which specializes in innovative planning, engineering, and design solutions for inland navigation structures including locks, waterfront structures, ports, dams, hydropower, flood risk reduction structures, and fish passage structures. In this role you’ll work alongside national industry leaders and local experts on technically challenging, high‑visibility projects. You’ll contribute to mechanical design and analysis, develop construction documents, and help solve practical engineering problems — all while gaining hands‑on experience and expanding your technical skills.
Essential Job Functions:

Assist in the planning and design of mechanical systems and components for water resources and navigation projects (e.g., locks and dams), hydraulic structures (e.g., gates, valves, hoists, cranes, hydropower plants, pump stations), and mechanical systems for ports and harbors.
Prepare engineering reports, technical specifications, plans, and construction schedules to support project development and delivery.
Perform mechanical engineering design calculations.
Translate engineering designs into detailed working drawings or coordinate with technical staff to produce construction-ready drawings.
Review and check drawings and design deliverables for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with standards and project requirements.
Support the development of probable construction cost estimates and assist in cost-related project documentation.
Requirements Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
A minimum of 1 year of relevant mechanical engineering experience.
An Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certificate.
Experience with design software such as MicroStation, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Ansys, and Inventor.
Proven analytical, written, and verbal communication skills, demonstrated through education and professional experience.
Demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple tasks and make independent decisions that advance company goals and project objectives.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, in person and virtually.
Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, Project).
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Professional Engineer (PE) license or working towards obtaining licensure.
Experience with conceptual and detailed mechanical design for water resources and navigation structures.
Prior experience supporting projects for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) or other federal, state, or local government agencies.
Construction support experience.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to travel for field visits and shop fabrication visits as needed. Travel is estimated to be up to 5% yearly (occasional overnight travel).
Ability to stand or walk for long periods during site visits, including the ability to kneel, crouch, or stoop.
Ability to walk up stairs and climb ladders.
Ability to work outdoors in a range of weather conditions (heat, rain, wind, cold) for extended periods.
Ability to sit at a workstation and use a computer for extended periods of time (up to 8 hours/day). Additional hours may be required based on project needs.
Manual dexterity to use a computer mouse, keyboard, and other tools.
Visual acuity to read and interpret detailed drawings and technical documents.
Ability to communicate effectively in-person and via electronic means.
Additional Information
This position is based in our Bellevue, WA office on a hybrid schedule, typically in the office 3-5 days/week.
This position is scheduled for full-time work (40 hours/week) with a typical schedule of 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday. Additional hours may be required based on project needs.
The salary range for this position is $81,000 - $99,000. Compensation may vary and offers will be determined based on a combination of an individual’s experience, skill set, certifications, and educational background.
