As a Senior Mechanical Engineer for our Infrastructure Design Center, you will work closely with national industry leaders and local experts to support clients with mechanical design. This position offers multiple growth opportunities, in both technical design expertise and program management. Our team is open to remote work in the US, with a preference for candidates located in Bellevue or Seattle, WA.
The Senior Mechanical Engineer will serve as a Program Manager and Technical Discipline Lead and provide mechanical engineering leadership for our inland navigation, fisheries and other water related projects. The Sr. Mechanical Engineer will provide technical direction and assist project teams with projects involving analysis and troubleshooting of existing mechanical equipment and systems, as well as analysis and preparation of drawings and specifications for hydraulic power units, gates, valves, bulkheads, pumping systems, piping, cranes, hoists and other mechanical and machine equipment. The projects are often associated with hydroelectric facilities, dams, navigation locks, fish passage facilities, flood control structures, and port facilities. Candidate should be able to direct a team of engineers to develop a set of plans, specifications, reports, and design documentation (design criteria and calculations) necessary to construct the work. Good technical writing and communication skills are required.
Some of the exciting projects for our mechanical engineering group include:
New Lock Final Design: Tetra Tech will be designing a new 1200’ lock to be part of the U.S. Inland Waterway Navigation System. Work will include designing valves, hydraulic power system, miter gate operators, large spherical bearings, and other miscellaneous equipment associated with miter gates and lock water control systems.
Replacement Valves at an Existing Navigation Lock: Tetra Tech will be developing a design to retrofit culvert valves and the operating machinery into an existing navigation lock. Detailed work will include developing the hydraulic power system that is compatible with the existing lock machinery and designing a new valve operator for increased reliability and performance.
Your Role and Responsibilities:
- Knowledgeable and proficient at sizing and specifying mechanical equipment to meet the project requirements.
- Ensure the quality, accuracy and completeness of the work related to engineering, design and drafting quality; compliance with established standards, procedures, codes and ordinances; adherence to design and project schedules, while adhering to the project budget.
- Provide adequate training, technical and administrative guidance, and day-to-day instruction to the project team. Provide mentoring and coaching to junior mechanical engineers.
- Serve as technical reviewer, project manager or project engineer on complex projects, ensuring design work complies with all applicable local, federal, and industry codes, regulations, and standards, and is in accordance with the client’s and Tetra Tech’s standards and procedures.
- Ensure inter-discipline coordination during the development and implementation of the design.
- Coordinate with sub-consultants, clients, and agencies.
- Build and maintain relationships with existing and potential clients.
- Assist with preparing input to proposals for prospective work, including technical approach, schedules, and budgets.
- Visit clients and project sites as needed for project discussion and coordination. Domestic and international travel may be needed at times.
- Perform project administration including writing reports, gathering information, tracking project costs and completing progress reports.
- Responsible for adhering to all health and safety policies and guidelines.
You'll Bring These Qualifications:
- Experience in a multi-disciplinary design firm or organization is desired.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering.
- 15-20+ years’ experience in related mechanical engineering.
- Strong working knowledge of industry Codes & Standards (ASME, ASTM, NEMA, etc.)
- Familiarity with computer software for Finite Element Analysis, such as
- SolidWorks, Ansys, and Inventor is desired.
- Additional experience in stress analysis and structural mechanics is desirable.
- Hydropower experience a plus.
- Professional Registration (PE) in Mechanical Engineering is required.

The salary range or hourly wage for this position is approximately $140,000 to $205,000 depending on education, qualifications, experience and work location.
