Intern Scientist / Engineer
The Opportunity
Tetra Tech is looking for a part-time Intern Scientist/Engineer based in Chantilly, VA.
Interns will have the opportunity to work with Tetra Tech project managers and/or senior-level team members to learn new skills and assist in administrative and scientific tasks that will support meaningful and substantive work products.
Candidates must be physically located in the Metro DC area. Relocation assistance for this position is not available.
Essential Job Functions
The following duties are considered essential to the role. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions:
- Assisting with field data collection, including surface water sampling.
- Collecting and entering data for evaluation by senior project staff.
- Assisting with report production and file management.
- Interpreting and recording data, conducting analyses, comparing findings to relevant studies to local, state and federal regulations to ensure compliance.
- Conducting research for ongoing projects, including reviewing regulations and permits, work plans, and other documents.
- Updating websites using Content Management Systems (CMS).

Required Qualifications
Degree: Candidates must be pursuing or recently obtained a BS/BA or MS in a relevant scientific discipline (E.g. environmental science, geology, environmental engineering, chemistry, biology, etc.)
Years of experience: Minimum of two years of study towards a degree (including Juniors, Seniors, and recent graduates) prior to the start of the internship; Completed at least six courses in a relevant scientific discipline described above prior to the start of the internship.
Knowledge, skills, abilities:
- Effective communication, both written and oral
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite with experience in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Teams.
- Ability to effectively manage time and complete efficiently
- Strong attention to details
- Ability to work collaboratively to solve complex problems.
- Work independently on assigned tasks
- Ability to take direction and constructive criticism on work products
- Strong health and safety ethic
Ability to function efficiently in a professional environment and effectively communicate with clients and subcontractors.
Training: Candidate must successfully complete OSHA HAZWOPER training, the associated physical, and be cleared for field work.
This position requires driving on a regular basis. Passing a motor vehicle record background check and maintaining a valid driver's license and good standing is required.
Preferred Qualifications
· Strong math and science background
· Familiarity with statistics programs such as R
· Cumulative GPA of 3.1 or higher
· OSHA 30 Hour Construction
· EPA AHERA Certification
· Familiarity with federal environmental regulations
· Experience with GIS and database management
· Fluency in languages other than English
· Knowledge of programing languages
Physical Requirements
- Candidate must be able to walk large project sites and physically able to carry up to 35 pounds of equipment (such as sampling tools, GPS unit, field screening equipment and cameras) during field work.
- Candidate must be able to work at a computer in an office environment for office-based tasks.
- Candidate must be able to operate a motor vehicle safely in an urban environment.
Work Environment / Environmental Factors
This position is located in Tetra Tech’s Chantilly, Virginia office. Remote or hybrid work is not available.
Additional Information
This is a part-time position, Monday through Friday daytime hours.
Other than travel to field sites in the DC Metro area, travel is not required for this position.
