The Opportunity
Tetra Tech is looking for a full-time Environmental Engineer based in Helena, MT.

Position Summary
This position provides both field and office engineering support for environmental assessment, remediation, and reclamation projects in Montana and other locations. Working under the direction of senior engineers and project managers, the candidate will assist with site characterization, remedial design, construction oversight, and regulatory coordination for contaminated sites — including petroleum/organic compounds, metals, asbestos, and other solid or hazardous wastes — and supports business development activities as needed. The position requires safe field practices, technical competence in data collection and analysis, clear written documentation, and effective communication with project teams, clients, and regulatory agencies.

Essential Job Functions
This position offers a great career growth opportunity for an individual who wants to make a positive impact on the environment and local communities, while further building their career and practice in a diverse team capable of addressing contaminated sites from preliminary assessment to closure.  The following duties are considered essential to the role. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions:

  • Assist with planning and execution of site characterization and investigation activities (drilling, soil/groundwater sampling, trenching, asbestos surveys, monitoring well installation, and geophysical surveys).
  • Collect, log, and QA/QC field data and samples; maintain chain-of-custody, field notes, and health & safety documentation.
  • Support laboratory testing coordination and review laboratory data for consistency, data quality, and preliminary interpretation.
  • Assist in development of remedial investigation reports, feasibility studies, remedial designs, and reclamation plans under senior staff guidance.
  • Perform basic engineering analyses and calculations to support contaminant mass balance, simple fate-and-transport screening, contaminant delineation, and daylighting of conceptual site models.
  • Prepare technical deliverables including field reports, boring and sampling logs, figures, tables, data summaries, and portions of regulatory submittals.
  • Provide construction oversight and documentation during remedial and reclamation activities (daily observation, subcontractor coordination, inspection reports, and conformance checks).
  • Support preparation of cost estimates, scopes of work, and proposals for remediation and environmental services; participate in client meetings and site visits to develop business opportunities.
  • Assist with permitting and regulatory compliance tasks; prepare or contribute to permit applications, notifications, and regulatory correspondence.
  • Follow and promote strict health, safety, and environmental procedures on site (including OSHA and project-specific H&S plans); participate in safety briefings and maintain personal protective equipment.
  • Maintain project schedules, track field and lab deliverables, and provide timely updates to project managers.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations clearly to project teams, clients, and regulators; escalate technical or safety issues to senior staff.
