Assistant / Junior Planner - Longmont, CO
The Opportunity:
Tetra Tech’s Longmont, CO office is currently seeking an Assistant / Junior Planner. This is an entry-level to early-career planning role supporting entitlement work for a broad range of clients (cities and counties). The Assistant/Junior Planner will help prepare entitlement submittals, research jurisdictional requirements, produce project exhibits, support client communications and public-facing processes, and gain experience working across multiple jurisdictions.

Essential Job Functions:
Prepare entitlement application materials: project narratives, findings, submittal checklists, cover letters, and exhibits tailored to jurisdiction-specific requirements.
Research and summarize zoning codes, comprehensive plans, and permit pathways for multiple cities/counties.
Draft portions of staff reports, public hearing materials, notices, and responses to agency comments under supervision.
Assist with mapping/exhibit production and basic GIS/CAD tasks; coordinate with technical team members (engineers, surveyors, environmental specialists) to assemble deliverables.
Track application submittals, agency comments, review timelines, and maintain project files; support QA/QC of deliverables.
Attend client/internal project meetings, support public outreach logistics (mailings, noticing), and occasionally attend local meetings/hearings.
Maintain accurate time and billing records for consulting projects.
Lead small submittals or discrete entitlement tasks with limited supervision.
Prepare complete submittal packages and manage routing/coordination with municipal or county staff.
Independently draft staff-report-level narratives and findings, and coordinate comment resolution.
Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, landscape architecture, architecture, environmental planning, public policy, geography, or related field.
1 - 3 years of professional planning, entitlement, permitting, or consulting experience.
Demonstrated writing ability and attention to detail.
Comfortable with client service tasks and multi-jurisdictional research.
Basic familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Willingness to make local travel to client or agency meetings as needed.
Internship/practicum experience in municipal or consulting planning.
A Pre-employment drug screening in compliance with state regulations is required.
Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.
Preferred Qualifications:
Masters in urban planning, landscape architecture, architecture, environmental planning, public policy, geography, or related field a plus.
Stronger GIS/CAD familiarity, prior experience preparing complete entitlement submittals, and demonstrated independent project work preferred.
Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, advanced Excel, and entitlement-related exhibit preparation.
Interest in AICP / planning certification (encouraged).
Physical Requirements:
Ability to occasionally travel locally (approx. <5% of travel required).
Office-based tasks will include prolonged periods of time sitting or standing at a desk and using a computer and other office equipment. Light document handling, occasional meeting attendance, rate light lifting (plans, boxes, boards).
Work Environment / Environmental Factors:
Primarily professional office environment with prolonged computer and screen use. This will include regular interaction with team members, clients, and public agency staff; occasional attendance at municipal offices, public meetings, or project sites.
Limited exposure to outdoor weather conditions and moderate noise levels during meetings or site visits.
Additional Information:
Full-time, Monday through Friday work scheduled (40 hours). Occasionally extended hours may be required based on project and/or client needs.
Position is based out of the local Longmont, CO office. Potential of a hybrid work schedule after the first six months of employment to be discussed with the direct supervisor. This potential arrangement is subject to review and may change at the company’s discretion.
Target salary range: $60,000 to $85,000. Please note that Tetra Tech considers various factors in determining pay, including but not limited to: education, relevant and demonstrated work experience in the role, skills, geographic location, qualifications, certifications, and other competencies relevant to the needs of the business.
