The Opportunity:

Tetra Tech is adding a highly motivated and experienced Wetland Biologist to join our California Natural Resources team supporting renewable energy development projects. The ideal candidate will bring strong expertise in wetland biology, environmental permitting, and natural resource surveys, with the ability to lead field efforts and support project delivery from planning through permitting.

 

This role involves fieldwork throughout California, with a focus on the Central Valley, and close collaboration with clients, regulatory agencies, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure successful project execution and regulatory compliance.

 

Location: California (Field-Based/Hybrid – Central Valley Focus)

Essential Job Functions:

Field Leadership & Technical Execution

  • Lead aquatic resources delineation surveys to determine federal and state jurisdictional boundaries
  • Serve as a task lead for biological surveys, including wetland, botanical, and wildlife efforts
  • Provide oversight, mentorship, and quality control for field teams and junior staff
  • Conduct and support multi-disciplinary fieldwork across natural resource areas

Permitting & Regulatory Coordination

  • Prepare Aquatic Resources Delineation Reports and resource agency permit applications
  • Maintain current knowledge of federal and California wetland regulations and policies
  • Coordinate with regulatory agencies including RWQCB, USACE, and CDFW
  • Support environmental compliance and permitting strategies for renewable energy projects

Project Support & Business Development

  • Provide technical expertise for environmental planning and critical issue analysis
  • Collaborate with project managers and internal teams to support project delivery and quality assurance
  • Assist with proposal development, scope preparation, and cost estimates
  • Support project management functions as needed
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, legislation, and industry standards.
  • Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
  • Work in a safe manner at all times and report all health and safety incidents and concerns.
  • Additional duties as required.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, or related field
  • 5–10 years of experience in environmental permitting and compliance, with a focus on aquatic resources
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum 2+ years leading field teams conducting aquatic resource delineations in California
  • Experience coordinating with RWQCB, USACE, and CDFW
  • Strong understanding of federal and California environmental regulations and permitting processes
  • Demonstrated success in obtaining permits and developing avoidance/minimization strategies
  • Experience with GIS, field mapping, and data collection tools
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and related technical tools
  • Willingness to travel approximately 25%, including overnight travel
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record without restrictions.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) certification
  • Experience leading botanical surveys and protocol-level wildlife surveys
  • Experience supporting renewable energy or infrastructure projects

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform fieldwork in wetlands, streams, and rugged terrain
  • Ability to walk long distances, stand for extended periods, and work in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to lift and carry field equipment (up to approximately 30–40 pounds)

 

Work Environment / Environmental Factors:

  • Combination of field, office, and hybrid work environments
  • Frequent exposure to outdoor conditions, including heat, cold, mud, water, and uneven terrain
  • Travel required throughout California, with focus on the Central Valley
  • Occasional extended workdays based on project needs

Compensation:

Pay commensurate with experience.

Pay Range: $90,000-$140,000 annually

 

Pay Range - There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience and demonstrated work experience in the above role; skills, certifications, and competencies that align to the specified role; geographic location; and education, as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position.
