The Opportunity:

Tetra Tech is currently seeking an experienced Staff Scientist to support ongoing projects. We are seeking a highly motivated professional with at least 4 years of experience. Our Portage, MI office provides a wide variety of environmental services that include subsurface investigations, soil and groundwater remediation design and implementation, remediation system operation and maintenance, hydrogeological studies supporting wastewater and water supply projects, wetland and ecological surveys, environmental compliance support, waste management, construction and demolition oversight, due diligence support, and long-term groundwater monitoring programs.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Performing soil and groundwater sampling, vapor intrusion sampling (soil gas, subslab and indoor air) activities at various environmental project sites throughout Midwest (primarily in Michigan).

  • Performing environmental assessments and site inspections.

  • Assist with field implementation and oversight of subcontractor on construction/remediation projects.

  • Completing daily field reports to summarize activities completed.

  • Complying with and leading field Health and Safety protocols.

  • Assisting with the preparation of work plans, remediation designs, data evaluation and reports, which may include preparation of text, tables, charts, and figures.

  • Completing laboratory analytical data validation.

  • Other duties as assigned. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, chemistry, or related discipline.

  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in environmental monitoring and remediation projects.

  • Current OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification is required.

  • Excellent technical abilities, communication, organization skills, and good technical writing skills.

  • Familiarity with MS Office Suite.

  • Experience with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and/or CAD required.

  • A pre-employment drug screening in compliance with state regulations is required.

  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree and professional certifications desirable.

Physical Requirements: 

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull equipment weighing 50 lbs in variable weather and terrain.

  • Ability to travel and perform field work/oversight as required (approx. 25 – 50% required).

  • Ability to walk across variable terrain, including uneven ground, in all weather conditions (extreme hot/cold temperatures, loud noises, bugs, etc.).

  • Have full range of motion to support field activities (ability to stand, bend, kneel, and reach during field activities)

Work Environment / Environmental Factors:

  • Field work will include work to be performed outside, as a result will include working in various environmental factors (weather, terrain, noise, etc.). This can include use of PPE, remaining stationary for long periods of time, prolonged periods of time walking, bending, lifting, and sitting for site assessments, sampling, oversight, and other field activities.

  • Office work will include extended periods sitting or standing at a desk and using a computer and other office equipment.

Additional Information:

  • Full-time, Monday through Friday work schedule (40 hours). Occasionally extended hours may be required based on project and/or client needs.

  • Work will be performed in a field and office setting
