Senior Water Resources Engineer

Position Summary:
We are seeking a Senior Water Resources Engineer with expertise in watershed planning, flood mitigation, and MS4 program management with proven project management skills. This role offers a unique opportunity to lead innovative projects focused on green stormwater infrastructure, water quality and quantity, and community resiliency for municipal, state, and federal clients. As a Project Manager, you will take on a leadership role managing our interdisciplinary teams, developing creative solutions, and delivering impactful projects.
Essential Job Functions:

Lead multidisciplinary teams as a project manager and/or technical lead on stormwater infrastructure projects, developing project scope, schedule, and budget.
Provide subject‑matter expertise in MS4, watershed planning, and flood mitigation.
Plan and deliver stormwater infrastructure design and rehabilitation projects, including H&H analysis and modeling, quantitative/qualitative analysis, and cost–benefit evaluations.
Evaluate alternatives, resolve complex technical issues, and coordinate solutions across engineering and scientific disciplines to meet project goals.
Prepare, review, and approve technical reports, memos, permit applications, and client deliverables that clearly communicate methods, results, and recommendations.
Collaborate with team members to ensure high quality deliverables through quality control and assurance processes.
Build and maintain client relationships by providing technical support, training, and responsive communication; represent the firm in project meetings.
Engage in business development activities, including building client relationships, contributing to proposals, and identifying opportunities to expand services.
Mentor and support junior engineers, fostering professional growth and maintaining a collaborative team environment.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, civil engineering, a related field.
A minimum of 7+ years of progressive water resources or stormwater engineering experience, with direct experience and a keen understanding of MS4, watershed planning, and flood mitigation.
An active Professional Engineer (PE) certification in the State of North Carolina (or the ability to gain licensure within six months of hire).
Demonstrated project management experience, including developing project scope, schedule, budget, and client management.
Proven client‑facing experience: ability to lead client meetings, provide technical training/support, and translate technical findings into clear written reports and presentations.
Demonstrated experience supporting municipal or public sector clients.
Proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcPro; and/or modeling software such as StormWise (previously ICPR), PCSWMM, and HEC-RAS.
Experience with Bentley ORD (MicroStation preferred).
Strong written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to conduct effective meetings and written report preparation.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering, or related field.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to travel for client and public meetings as needed. Travel is estimated to be up to 5% yearly (occasional overnight travel).
Ability to sit at a workstation and use a computer for extended periods of time (up to 8 hours/day). Additional hours may be required based on project needs.
Manual dexterity to use a computer mouse, keyboard, and other tools.
Visual acuity to read and interpret detailed drawings and technical documents including topographic and site surveys, construction document plan sets, and reports.
Ability to communicate effectively in-person and via electronic means.
Additional Information
For this role, we are open to hybrid work schedules in our Research Triangle Park (RTP), NC office, or remote work schedules within the Mid-Atlantic United States region.
This position is scheduled for full-time work (40 hours/week) with a typical schedule of 8:00am to 5:00pm (Eastern Time) Monday to Friday. Additional hours may be required based on project needs.
