We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Senior Financial Accountant to join our growing finance team.

Reporting to the Financial Controller, the Senior Financial Accountant is responsible for delivering accurate and timely financial reporting, ensuring compliance with Australian Accounting Standards (AASB), and supporting the organisation’s financial integrity. The role plays a key part in month-end processes, statutory reporting, audit coordination, and continuous improvement of financial systems and controls.

The role

The Senior Financial Accountant plays a critical role in safeguarding the organisation’s financial integrity while delivering insightful financial reporting and analysis. The position supports strategic decision-making through high-quality financial information and drives improvements in financial processes, controls, and systems. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for delivering accurate financial reporting, ensuring compliance with Australian accounting standards, and providing strategic insights to support business decision-making. Alongside overseeing month-end and year-end processes, you will play a hands-on role in day-to-day accounting operations and treasury activities, including cash flow management, reconciliations, and maintaining strong financial controls.


Key responsibilities

  • Manage the month‑end close process to ensure accurate and timely financial close.
  • Perform day‑to‑day general ledger accounting, including cash management and bank reconciliations.
  • Prepare and maintain company‑level balance sheet reconciliations
  • Review and oversee balance sheet reconciliations at project level.
  • Prepare and maintain rolling cashflow forecasts and support treasury management.
  • Coordinate with external auditors: prepare audit schedules, manage audit requests and respond to queries.
  • Support the Financial Controller on special projects and ad‑hoc financial analysis.
  • Identify, design and implement process and system improvements to enhance finance efficiency and controls.
  • Ensure all financial outputs comply with Australian Accounting Standards (AASB) and internal policies.
     

Selection criteria

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field; CPA/CA or working towards.
  • Minimum 5–7 years’ progressive finance experience, experience in international development/donor-funded projects, an advantage.
  • Strong technical skills in accounting systems (e.g., Xero, QuickBooks, Oracle).
  • Advanced Excel skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Proven ability to implement and maintain internal controls.
  • Solutions‑focused, proactive approach to process improvement and automation.
  • Experience managing complex financial reporting requirements.
  • Highly organised, proactive self‑starter who adapts quickly to change, and can prioritise competing demands.
