The opportunity
The Mekong-Australia Partnership Support Unit (MAP SU) supports Australia’s engagement in the Mekong subregion by delivering programs that strengthen regional cooperation, leadership, skills development, and knowledge sharing across Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.
As the Scholar and Alumni Engagement Specialist, you will play a key role in designing and delivering scholar and alumni engagement initiatives, professional development activities, networking opportunities, and alumni grants programs. Working closely with DFAT, Australian institutions, regional partners and program stakeholders, you will help build a connected and influential alumni network while ensuring activities align with development objectives, regional priorities, and principles of inclusion, safeguarding and value-for-money delivery.
Key responsibilities
- Provide strategic advice and technical leadership to shape alumni engagement initiatives, strengthen program delivery, and align activities with regional priorities and organisational objectives.
- Lead the implementation of the Mekong Leaders Network, regional engagement activities, and scholar and alumni events, including the development of concept notes, scopes of work, and procurement documentation.
- Support the design and management of alumni grants and monitoring activities, working closely with program stakeholders to track results, manage risks, and drive continuous improvement through data-informed decision-making.
- Build and maintain strong partnerships with Australian Embassies, Australia Awards managing contractors, scholars, alumni, Australian institutions, and regional stakeholders to design and deliver impactful engagement initiatives across the Mekong region and Australia.
- Identify and apply lessons learned and good practice from regional and multi-country programs to strengthen scholar and alumni engagement activities and support continuous program improvement.
- Develop and oversee high-quality communications, reports, promotional content, and engagement materials that align with DFAT requirements, MAP branding, and communication protocols.
- Collaborate with program and communications teams to showcase scholar and alumni achievements through compelling stories, media content, and stakeholder communications.
- Champion GEDSI principles and ensure all scholar and alumni engagement activities are inclusive, accessible, and aligned with DFAT safeguarding standards and PSEAH requirements.
- Proactively identify, manage, and escalate program risks, ensuring compliance with risk management, child protection, and safeguarding obligations across all engagement initiatives.
About You
- A bachelor’s degree in international development, human resources, education, public relations, or a related field. A postgraduate qualification is desirable.
- At least 3–5 years of relevant experience in alumni relations, stakeholder engagement, program coordination, or related roles, preferably within international development, education, or regional cooperation contexts.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and digital platforms (e.g. Eventbrite, Smartygrants, Mailchimp, social media tools, CRM databases).
- Strong communication skills in Mekong language (Thai, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Burmese and Lao), is desirable, and English (verbal and writing).
- Experience working in or with the Mekong region or Southeast Asia is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders, including alumni, government officials, and partner organisations.
- Strong organisational and project management skills, including event coordination, scheduling, and budget tracking.
