Principal Waste and Resources Consultant

Purpose & Scope of the Role
You will prepare environmental permit applications and associated technical submissions, provide bid support and deliver specialist advice on operating techniques, environmental risk assessments and management plans. The role spans assessment of Best Available Techniques and Appropriate Measures, drafting ISOS/ISDS/ISFT submissions for local authority contracts, and supporting wider waste and resource management projects across the team’s portfolio.

As a Senior/Principal Consultant you will strengthen client delivery, raise technical standards and contribute to business growth. Your permit applications and technical outputs will directly inform investment, operations and regulatory decisions, while your developing leadership will support team capability and long‑term succession planning.
Core Capabilities
- Permit Preparation & Technical Writing — Lead clear, compliant environmental permit applications, operating techniques and management plans informed by robust risk assessment.
- Regulatory & Technical Assessment — Apply BAT/Appropriate Measures and interpret regulatory requirements to deliver practicable, evidence‑based recommendations.
- Bid & Contract Submissions — Produce ISOS, ISDS, ISFT and other tender materials to support successful procurement outcomes.
- Client & Project Management — Manage stakeholder relationships, coordinate project delivery and contribute to commercial growth through high‑quality technical input.
- Coaching & Continuous Development — Mentor junior staff, engage with CPD and internal training and support progression toward senior roles and chartership.
Training, Qualifications & Experience
Degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline. Proven experience preparing environmental permits, operating techniques and risk assessments. Knowledge of BAT/Appropriate Measures and local authority waste contract submissions. Working towards or holding CIWM chartership desirable. Full UK driving licence.
Working Environment
Preferred offices: Birmingham, Manchester, Cardiff or Southampton (all locations considered). Hybrid working between office and home; typical office attendance flexible to project needs. Projects are UK‑wide — occasional travel, out‑of‑hours work and overnight stays may be required.
