Mid-Level Environmental Scientist / Project Manager
The Opportunity
Tetra Tech is looking for a full-time Mid-Level Environmental Scientist/Project Manager based in Kansas City, MO.
Position Summary
The selected candidate will provide support on various environmental projects for both government and private sector clients. This position will primarily support and manage Brownfields, due diligence and compliance projects.
In this position you will be part of multiple project teams, in some cases as a project manager and in other cases as project support staff. You will have opportunities to obtain licenses and certifications to conduct asbestos and lead related work if desired and do not currently have. You will continue to expand upon your experience and gain valuable experience while managing projects, project budgets and project teams and have the opportunity to expand further into leadership roles.
Essential Job Functions

Prepare or oversee preparation of reports (including Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments and hazardous materials surveys), Quality Assurance Project Plans (QAPPs), Sampling and Analysis Plans (SAPs), Analyses of Brownfields Cleanup Alternatives (ABCAs), and Remedial Action Plans (RAPs)
Collect soil, groundwater, surface water, and indoor air samples.
Interpret sample data and prepare data summary reports.
Conduct Phase I Environmental Site Assessments.
Support environmental studies including asbestos and lead-based paint surveys, and mold and radon assessments.
Communicate and interact with project clients, vendors, and subcontractors.
Oversee and manage subcontractors during site assessment, excavation, and other remedial activities.
Support proposal and cost estimate development.
Market/manage existing and new clients.
Mentor and train junior level staff.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, biology, chemistry, geology, engineering or a related field.
Completion of 40-Hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training and current 8-hour HAZWOPER refresher training. If the successful candidate does not already possess this training, Tetra Tech will provide training prior to initiating regular work duties in the field.
6-10 years of experience with environmental studies, analyzing for hazardous materials in the environment (soil, groundwater, air, etc.), environmental consulting or related activities.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills (both written and verbal).
- Highly motivated and customer focused and works well in a team environment.
- Work well in a team environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Strong attention to detail.
Excellent communication, responsiveness, and customer service skills.
In addition, the following is required:
- Passing a criminal background check.
- Driving on a regular basis. Passing a motor vehicle record background check and maintaining a valid driver's license and good driving record is required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with environmental compliance work, including permitting and reporting.
- Extensive report writing experience and some project management experience.
- Previous technical review experience and experience in environmental compliance.
Physical Requirements
The physical demands described here represent those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Reasonable accommodations may be made. Candidates must be able to:
- Lift sample coolers and other equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Wear a full-face respirator.
- Complete an annual medical monitoring program, including pulmonary function testing.
Work Environment / Environmental Factors
This full-time position requires roughly 25-35% travel.
Work is mainly performed in the Kansas City office; however, occasional travel to perform fieldwork and project oversight in mid-west and sometimes nationwide will be required.
This position will require some outdoor work within the four-state area of Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, and Nebraska during all seasons, including peak summer and winter conditions, with opportunities to support projects throughout the country.
Projects outside the Kansas City area will require overnight travel.
Additional Information
- Approximately 25% travel is required for fieldwork and project oversight in the Midwest and occasionally nationwide.
- This position requires driving on a regular basis. Passing a motor vehicle record background check and maintaining a valid driver's license and good driving record is required.
