We are currently seeking a qualified Marine Survey Technician/Online Marine Navigator to support a variety of projects in a dynamic consulting environment. The role involves performing topographic, marine positioning, hydrographic, and geophysical survey planning, as well as field data collection, interpretation, and reporting. The successful candidate will support cable lay operations and perform various surveying and navigation tasks both domestically and internationally.
Your Role:
· Perform and assist with topographic, marine positioning, hydrographic, and geophysical survey planning, field data collection, interpretation, and reporting.
· Provide MakaiLay support for cable lay operations, including planning, commissioning, generating ship plans, and operating the software during cable lay. Produce as-left documentation upon completion.
· Setup, operate, and troubleshoot surveying and navigation system hardware, computers, software, and cabling.
· Setup, operate, and troubleshoot navigation equipment (e.g., GNSS, RTK), acoustic doppler profilers, and subsea positioning equipment (e.g., USBL).
· Work aboard boats ranging from 12 to 250 feet in length, both domestically and internationally.
· Setup and operate static and RTK GPS receivers and process and perform QC on the data.
· Perform field topographic, scientific, or engineering surveys using GPS and/or Total Station.
· Utilize AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, or ArcGIS to produce maps, charts, and alignment sheets.
· Understand geodesy, survey, and tidal datum, and establish and recover survey control.
· Develop and follow plans, specifications, SOPs, procedures, and promote safe work practices.
· Be self-motivated, hardworking, ethical, trustworthy, and dependable.
· Have strong analytical and communication skills and a strong desire to learn and adapt.
· Be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
· Travel for domestic and foreign work, approximately 30% of the year, on assignments is required.
· Ability to work in the field in inclement weather as well as offshore for weeks at a time is required.
· Physical ability to load/unload equipment (lifting 50 lbs.), walk safely over rugged terrain, and navigate ships' ladders is required.
Qualifications:
· Associate degree or Certification or License in Land or Hydrographic Surveying with 3-5 years of experience (required).
· Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Geodesy, Geomatics, Oceanography, Marine Geology, with 2-3 years’ direct experience in Navigation/Positioning, Land, or Hydrographic Surveying (required).
· Experience on several (2+) cable installation projects using MakaiLay software (desired), experience on several power cable installation projects using MakaiLay (preferred).
· LSIT desired; or PLS preferred.
· More than 5 years of field experience as a Navigation/Positioning Operator, Survey Technician, Oceanographic Technician, Survey Party Chief, or Hydrographic Surveyor, and a licensed professional land surveyor ideal.
· Experience working on small boats and large vessels desired but not required.
· Experience working in a consulting, multi-client, fast-paced environment with changes in daily activities highly desirable.
· Experience with vessel positioning, geodesy, cartography, GIS, photogrammetry, and charting desired.
· Competence in Microsoft Office, Windows OS, navigation/positioning, survey, and charting software packages required.
· Expert software experience with some combination of HYPACK HYSWEEP, QPS QINSy, CARIS, MakaiLay, EIVA (two of 5 required), ESRI ArcGIS, AutoCAD Civil 3D, Global Mapper, SURFER, and/or programming skills a plus.
· Expert instrumentation experience should include some combination of survey-grade GNSS/GPS receivers, robotic total stations, Ultra-Short Baseline (USBL) GPS-integrated inertial navigation systems, ADCP, CTD, ROV, AUV, and underwater video.
· Experience with sampling equipment such as towed equipment, vibracorer, Van Veen, Niskin samplers, otter-trawls, box-corer, and gravity corer beneficial.
· A pre-employment drug screen in compliance with federal regulations is required, along with a physical if needed.
· Must possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record without restrictions.
Compensation:
Salary commensurate with experience.
Salary Range: $30.00 - $60.00 hour.
Pay Range - There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience and demonstrated work experience in the above role; skills, certifications, and competencies that align to the specified role; geographic location; and education, as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position.
