Requirements:

  • Minimum of B.S. degree in marine science, fisheries, or natural resource field (M.S. preferred).
  • 3-5 years experience serving as a SME on fisheries impact assessment, permitting, NEPA, or essential fish habitat assessments.
  • 1-3 years experience conducting vessel-based marine surveys; may include seasonal positions, observer experience, or internships as relevant experience.
  • Deep understanding of marine fisheries as a biological resource and a socioeconomic resource, including policies and regulations associated with each.
  • Familiarity with, and analysis of, publicly available commercial fisheries catch and landings datasets.
  • Familiarity with methods used to interpret and map benthic habitat features from high-resolution geophysical (HRG) survey data (e.g., multibeam, side scan sonar, etc.) and other underwater imagery (images collected from drop-down cameras and towed-video).
  • Basic understanding of marine spatial planning, commercial/recreational fishing regulations, Essential Fish Habitat (EFH), Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Endangered Species Act (ESA), Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), and Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) offshore wind survey recommendations.
  • Ability to utilize a taxonomic key and identify common marine, estuarine, and freshwater fish species in the northeastern U.S.
  • Health and safety training (one or more desired); GWO Basic/Sea Survival, STCW Training, OSHA 40-hr HAZWOPER, OSHA 10-hr Construction.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and manage a suite of sampling gear aboard vessels, including logistics during mobilization/demobilization.
  • Flexibility to accommodate frequent travel and work intermittently and extended hours during the field season to meet fast-paced project requirements.
  • High level of motivation and an ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Possess solid communication skills and demonstrated proficiency with MS Office Suite and ArcGIS (desired).
  • Must be multi-task oriented and possess excellent problem-solving skills.
  • A valid Driver’s License, clean driving record, and a dependable personal means of transportation are required.
  • Employee is expected to maintain a professional manner in all aspects of their work.
