Literacy and Numeracy Adviser

This role is pivotal in developing and delivering effective literacy and numeracy interventions.
The program has the option to separate the Literacy and Numeracy responsibilities of this role and create two 0.5 FTE positions. As such, we encourage applications from candidates who have a particular strength in one of these areas.

The opportunity
- Lead the development and delivery of literacy and numeracy interventions in Tuvalu
- Full time role, based in Funafuti preferred
- Initial contract until February 2026, with the possibility of extension
Tuvalu and Australia Partnership for Quality Education (TAPQE)
The Tuvalu and Australia Partnership for Quality Education (TAPQE) Program aims to strengthen education sector performance and Australia’s Pacific relationships, driving shared prosperity and progress. TAPQE has a focus on stronger literacy and numeracy outcomes; more equitable and relevant education pathways; and more inclusive, evidence-based and efficient government systems. The program requires unique delivery approaches to effectively address local challenges within a resource constrained operating environment with Tuvalu impacted by the growing pressures of climate change.. The program is tailored to the local cultural context and government priorities, through Tuvalu’s Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development (MEHRD) and stakeholders, including teachers, school and community leaders, parents and other donor partners.
Key responsibilities
As the Literacy and Numeracy Adviser, you will provide high-quality technical advice and coaching, to build the capabilities of MEHRD staff and school personnel. Your leadership will be essential for establishing productive and efficient working relationships with local stakeholders to facilitate the successful delivery of the program and improve teaching and learning outcomes.
- Provide ongoing professional development for teachers and educators, including but not limited to on-the-job training, mentoring and coaching, with a focus on local skills strengthening and ownership.
- Support curriculum reforms in literacy and numeracy.
- Support the inclusion and improvement in learning outcomes for all children, including children with a disability and with remedial educational needs.
- Support school leadership and the establishment and ongoing involvement of school communities’ involvement in monitoring school performance in literacy and numeracy.
- Proactively foster a culture of continuous learning by identifying areas for improvement in relation to program activities.
Selection criteria
To excel in this role, the ideal candidate will have substantial experience as a classroom teacher or adviser, and will have a solid and contemporary understanding of the teaching and learning processes essential to basic literacy and numeracy. As well as demonstrated technical expertise, the successful candidate will have the interpersonal skills necessary to build and maintain effective working relationships with team members and stakeholders.
- Relevant post-graduate qualifications in literacy and numeracy teaching and curriculum development, or similar
- Ability in training and coaching teachers and head teachers in literacy and numeracy learning
- Demonstrated experience delivering a range of targeted training and mentoring in a development context to increase confidence, skills and knowledge of counterparts, to deliver successful results
- Experience working in and understanding of Tuvalu, or other relevant Pacific regional experience, and the related education challenges and opportunities.
