General Accountant

 

Position Summary:

The General Accountant is responsible for supporting the company’s General Accounting and Accounts Receivable functions, with a primary focus on cash application, account reconciliation, collections support, and month-end close activities. This role works closely with branch personnel, management, and the accounting team to ensure accurate financial records, timely resolution of account issues, and effective monitoring of receivables performance.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Prepare monthly balance sheet account reconciliations and investigate variances or discrepancies.
  • Perform daily and monthly bank reconciliations, ensuring transactions are accurately recorded and issues are resolved promptly.
  • Process and apply customer payments accurately to open invoices.
  • Research and resolve unapplied cash, payment discrepancies, and customer account issues.
  • Prepare and post journal entries, along with supporting documentation, for month-end and year-end close.
  • Organize and participate in monthly branch receivables meetings.
  • Prepare high/low bad debt reserve analysis for review by the Controller.
  • Monitor Accounts Receivable aging and partner with branch personnel to address past-due balances and collection concerns.
  • Communicate with branch management regarding open receivable items and recommend collection actions as needed.
  • Review, analyze, and process customer write-offs, adjustments, and bad debt requests in accordance with company policy.
  • Prepare Days Sales Outstanding (DSO) reporting and other accounts receivable performance metrics for management review.
  • Maintain accurate customer account records and ensure supporting documentation is complete and properly retained.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of accounting experience, including general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, accounts receivable, and month-end close.
  • Experience preparing journal entries and supporting financial reports.
  • Experience in accounts receivable, cash application, and collections support.
  • Familiarity with ERP/accounting systems.
  • Knowledge of aging reports, DSO, bad debt reserves, and write-off processes.
  • Strong keyboarding and computer skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other standard office applications.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills, analytical ability, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to work on-site at the office during regular business hours.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working in branch-based or multi-location operations.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods.
  • Frequent use of a computer, keyboard, and telephone.
  • Frequent verbal communication with internal staff and external contacts.

 

Work Environment / Environmental Factors:

  • Standard office environment.
  • In-office presence is required Monday through Friday during regular business hours.
  • Occasional extended hours may be required to meet business needs, especially during month-end or year-end close.

 

Additional Information:

  • Full-time, hourly position.
  • Employment is contingent upon passing background screening requirements including criminal history, drug testing, and other job required screenings.
