About Australia Assists

Australia Assists is an Australian Government program that deploys skilled humanitarian specialists to support multilateral agencies, governments, civil society and communities to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters and conflict. Australia Assists aims to save lives, alleviate suffering, maintain human dignity in the wake of crises, and strengthen preparedness for future emergencies.

Humanitarian specialists from the Australia Assists roster will be mobilised to work with partners across the Indo-Pacific region and globally, before, during and after humanitarian crises. The program takes a strengths-based approach, recognising and reinforcing local leadership, building on existing capabilities, and promoting equity and inclusion. This ensures that outcomes are impactful, sustainable and tailored to the unique needs of each community.

Australia Assists roster members must possess a variety of skill sets and come from diverse backgrounds. All roster members are expected to be able to demonstrate:

  • Relevant qualifications and experience in their identified specialty.
  • Relevant qualification, training and or experience working in the humanitarian or development sector.
  • Demonstrated strong cultural competency skills, knowledge of, and or relevant experience working in the countries and regions you wish to deploy in.
  • Strong emotional intelligence and resilience, and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances and requirements.
  • Demonstrated expertise in public diplomacy with outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Exemplary professionalism, dedication, compassion, and respect for humanitarian principles.
  • Demonstrable diplomacy skills aligning with Australia's International Development Policy are essential. While Australia Assists roster members are not required to be Australian citizens, they must possess a thorough understanding of this policy and be willing to support it, as the program operates under Australia's Official Development Assistance.

Roster members can express interest in specific paid deployment opportunities, where they will work with and within a host organisation. Host organisations can include a wide range of organisations, such as multilateral agencies including United Nations organisations, partner governments and key regional and national civil society partners. Deployments will vary in length from a few weeks through to 18 months, depending on the host organisation’s requirements and the agreed objectives of the deployment.
