Environmental Scientist Junior
Tetra Tech is looking for a part time Environmental Scientist who will be responsible for supporting stormwater, surface water, and groundwater monitoring, including planning, managing equipment and supplies, coordinating with Team and analytical laboratories, driving vehicles to and from sites, conducting inspections, taking and downloading photos, completing forms and technical reports. Other types of field work may also be required, such as asset assessment and field testing. The Candidate will work in the field independently and under the supervision of a Team leader and in the office collaboratively with peers, senior technical staff, project managers and under the supervision of their assigned manager. Responsibilities:
• Work as a Team member conducting stormwater, surface water, and groundwater monitoring.
• Assist with internal equipment and supplies organization, and coordination with outside laboratories.
• Manage and maintain field equipment and supplies and company vehicles.
• Prepare and plan for field work, including travel to and from work sites.
• Conduct inspections, evaluations, and monitoring within given timeframe and budget.
• Record and compile data, accurately and timely, into coherent products for Project Manager and Team.
• Assist with interpreting data patterns and trends, compare to regulatory standards and assist in the development of recommendations for actions based on regulatory constraints.
• Assist with preparation of written documents, sampling and analysis plans, data summary reports, and technical evaluations.
• Coordinate and communicate with clients and other Tetra Tech offices.
• Follow all Tetra Tech and client health and safety protocol.
• Other duties may be assigned.

• A driver’s license current and valid for a state in the United States is required.
• Ability to work well as part of a team, as well as complete assigned independent activities, for both field and office project work.
• Attention to detail is required. The successful candidate must be able to assist the Project Managers and field leads with observing, evaluating, and documenting site field conditions and communicating changes in field conditions to senior staff.
• Ability to communicate effectively and provide thoughtful input and/or make evaluated decisions for the betterment of the client and the company.
• Skilled as a problem solver, will have an interest and ability to work in a collaborative manner, and will have the flexibility to adapt to changing situations.
• Experience preparing technical reports, memos, response to comments tables, and diagrams.
• Knowledge of and ability to analyze laboratory reports and environmental data.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite products including MS Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook is required.
• Experience with interfacing with clients, subcontractors, working groups, and internal customers desired, but not required.
• GIS experience is desired, but not required.
• Experience or coursework with database and/or statistical software is desired, but not required.
• This position requires OSHA health and safety, client-specific safety, first aid and CPR training, and medical monitoring, paid for by Tetra Tech.
Education & Experience:
• A bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) or master’s degree (MS) in Geology, Geological Sciences or Engineering, or a bachelor’s degree in the natural sciences (e.g., Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology) is required.
• Junior level position with minimum 1 year of work experience in the environmental consulting, engineering, or related industry.
• Previous field experience preferred, including sampling activities and stormwater inspections.

• Candidate must be able to walk large project sites and must be physically able to carry up to 35 pounds of equipment and coolers containing ice and filled sample bottles during field work.
• Field activities take place in a variety of weather conditions and can occur in remote locations and include areas of uneven terrain or occur during harsh weather and long periods of standing or walking.
• Field sampling and monitoring may include various media (groundwater, surface water, sediment, and stormwater).
• Candidate must be able to sit or stand at a desk / computer in an office environment for office-based tasks.
Pay for this position is in the range of $25-$35 per hour

Project work will entail approximately 75% fieldwork and 25% office work. Office work will generally consist of water quality equipment/supply preparation, reviewing/preparing SOPs, preparing field forms, and other office tasks in a typical office environment with controlled conditions. Fieldwork may entail work in a wide range of outdoor conditions, including work in adverse weather conditions, such as high heat, extreme cold, precipitation, and job sites where dense vegetation, uneven ground, physical obstacles, and animals/plants/insects may be present. Field project durations are not normally expected to exceed two weeks. However, some longer-term field assignments are possible. Professional development opportunities will also be available.
Language & Communication Skills: Ability to read, research, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical documents and procedures, and government regulations. Ability to write detailed reports, business correspondence, and procedures suitable for client submittal. Ability to effectively present information, communicate, and respond to questions from coworkers, clients, customers, and the general public. Effective communication skills, both orally and in written form. Must be fluent in the English language – reading, writing, and speaking. Spanish speaking skills are desired, but not required.
Mathematical Skills: Basic mathematical skills are required. Understanding of units of scale and measurement for the evaluation of figures, site plans, and laboratory data is required, as well as the ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Strong background in typical problem solving, is required. Statistical analysis and modeling are desired, but not required.
Other Skills: Candidate must have the ability to work well in a professional and team-oriented environment, as well as independently. Candidate should possess strong organizational skills, excellent leadership skills, and be client-focused. Ability to be self-directed, solution-oriented and anticipate and/or identify issues early. Must possess basic computer skills; the computer skills must include proficiency in Microsoft Windows, Word and Excel. Knowledge/experience in computer-based, graphics software, data evaluation software, and electronic field data collection is desirable, but not necessary
