Environmental Scientist (Early Career, Field Lead) Boise, ID
The Opportunity:
Tetra Tech is adding an Environmental Scientist (Early Career, Field Lead) to primarily support wetland delineations and ecological field studies, with a focus on vegetation, soils, and hydrology, and assist in the preparation of defensible technical documentation for regulatory compliance.
The role is designed for an early-career professional capable of independently leading small field crews on routine to moderately complex delineations, while developing toward increased technical responsibility and field leadership over time. Additional responsibilities may include providing support for a variety of environmental permitting and related environmental investigations/monitoring, as needed. This position differs from typical entry-level roles in that it includes field leadership responsibilities and independent execution of routine work.
The position provides hands-on experience in both field data collection and technical documentation, with mentorship and growth opportunities within a collaborative team environment.

Essential Job Functions:
Field Work & Data Collection
- Conduct wetland delineations and ecological field surveys, including vegetation identification, soil characterization, and hydrologic assessment.
- Lead small field crews (typically two-person teams) in executing delineations and other field investigations.
- Identify plant species in the field using regional guides and dichotomous keys, including grasses and forbs.
- Describe and classify soils in the field, including identification of hydric soil indicators.
- Collect and document field data using GPS, maps, photographs, and detailed field notes.
- Perform fieldwork in remote and off-trail environments under varying conditions.
Technical Reporting & Analysis
- Translate field data into clear, defensible technical documentation under the guidance of senior staff.
- Support preparation of technical reports and regulatory documentation, including wetland delineation reports.
- Support GIS-based desktop analysis and mapping for project planning.
Project Support & Development
- Participate in both field and office-based work across the project lifecycle.
- Maintain high standards for data quality, safety, and professionalism.
- Follow established health and safety procedures and site-specific safety plans.
- Develop technical skills and progress toward increased responsibility over time.
- Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, legislation, and industry standards.
- Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.

Field/Office Balance:
- The position includes a mix of field-based work (particularly during the field season) and office-based work focused on data processing, analysis, and report preparation.
- Ability and willingness to travel and support out-of-town field efforts, including extended field assignments as needed.
Non-essential Job Functions:
Environmental Investigation/Monitoring Support
- Support environmental site investigations, including sampling of groundwater, soil, soil vapor, and air.
- Assist with sample collection, documentation, and tracking in accordance with project requirements.
- Support compliance and remediation-related activities as needed.
Required Qualifications:
- A degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Geosciences, Geology, or a related field.
- Three to five years of relevant experience (internships and field experience acceptable).
- Experience or coursework in wetland delineation, including vegetation, soils, and hydrology indicators.
- Ability to identify regional plant species (Idaho or similar Western U.S. ecosystems preferred).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently in field environments with guidance as needed.
- Willingness to travel and lead and support extended field assignments, including multi-day mobilizations.
- Physical ability to perform demanding fieldwork (hiking, off-trail travel, carrying equipment).
- Familiarity with field data collection tools (GPS, mapping, field notes).
- Interest in expanding into environmental sampling and site investigation work.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate or learn to operate 4WD vehicles.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Coursework or experience in botany, soil science, hydrology, or wetland ecology.
- Wetland Training Institute coursework or equivalent.
- Familiarity with NEPA or state-level permitting processes.
- Experience with GIS software (ArcGIS, Field Maps, etc.).
- Experience with plant identification using dichotomous keys.
- Willingness to obtain HAZWOPER certification (40-hour).
- Internship or field experience in environmental consulting or related work.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform fieldwork in remote and rugged terrain, including wetlands and off-trail environments.
- Ability to walk long distances, stand for extended periods, and work in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to lift and carry field equipment (up to approximately 30–40 pounds).
Work Environment / Environmental Factors:
- Combination of field, office, and hybrid work environments.
- Exposure to outdoor environmental conditions including heat, cold, rain, mud, and uneven terrain.
- Travel required for field assignments, including multi-day and overnight travel.
- Work may involve exposure to construction sites and environmental sampling conditions.

Compensation:
Pay commensurate with experience.
Pay Range: $50,000-$70,000 annually
Pay Range - There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience and demonstrated work experience in the above role; skills, certifications, and competencies that align to the specified role; geographic location; and education, as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position.
