Your Role:

We are seeking an Environmental Chemist with 5 or more years of experience to support a variety of environmental projects related to federal, state, municipal, and commercial clients. The candidate will be responsible for:

  • Routine maintenance and calibration of environmental monitoring equipment
  • Data validation and data quality assessment support
  • Field investigations (including soil, sediment, water, and air sampling; subcontractor supervision; and coordination with analytical laboratories)
  • Laboratory procurement/management
  • Preparation of technical reports. 

The candidate will work collaboratively with the supervision of a project or program manager. Prior experience with laboratory analysis is preferred. The candidate will prepare various technical deliverables including data validation reports, letters, proposals, cost estimates, tables, and figures.

Qualifications:

5 or more years of professional environmental consulting experience is preferred. Prior experience to include analytical laboratory preparation and analysis, data validation and data quality assessment, site characterization, and vapor intrusion assessments. 

  • Previous field experience preferred, including conducting sampling of environmental media, maintenance, calibration, and practical experience with environmental monitoring equipment, and the ability to work independently on field projects.
  • Experience with air monitoring instruments is preferred.
  • Experience preparing technical reports and memos is required. Must be a competent technical writer.
  • Familiarity with and understanding of the various compendiums of laboratory analytical methods, including SW-846, EPA toxic organic methods in ambient air, and the Contract Laboratory Program (CLP) Statements of Work is required.
  • Experience conducting multiple levels of data validation, up to and including detailed reviews of full laboratory data packages (equivalent to Stage 4 reviews of Level 4 data packages) is preferred.  
  • Experienced in the application of the EPA CLP National Functional Guidelines for organic, inorganic, and high-resolution data review is preferred.  Broad experience validating analytical data for both inorganic parameters (metals and wet chemical methods) and organic parameters (volatile and semi volatile organic compounds, pesticides, herbicides, polychlorinated biphenyl compounds, and dioxins/furans).
  • Ability to interface with clients, subcontractors, working groups, and internal customers required.
  • Previous experience working on proposals is preferred.
  • Project management training and experience is preferred.
  • Ability to assist with cost estimating and obtaining bids from vendors and subcontractors is preferred.
  • The successful candidate will communicate effectively and make evaluated decisions for the betterment of the client and the company.
  • Experience conducting data quality assessments and writing data quality assessment reports, summarizing the reconciliation of a project's data quality with the stated data quality objectives (DQO) is required.
  • Experience reviewing and managing environmental data and databases using software such as Microsoft Access or R is preferred. 

Education and Certifications:

• Miniumum of a BS/BA degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a closely-related scientific discipline is required.  Advanced degrees are preferred.
• OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER Training is preferred.

Physical Demands:

  • Candidate must be able to walk around project sites for a full day if required and must be physically able to carry up to 50 pounds of equipment (such as sampling tools, GPS unit, field screening equipment and cameras) during field work.
  • Candidate must be willing and capable of conducting field work in Level A, B, C, or D PPE.
  • Field activities take place in a variety of weather conditions and can occur in remote locations and include areas of uneven terrain or occur during harsh weather.  
  • Candidate must be able to work in an office environment.

Work Environment:

  • The work environment will consist of a mix of office and field work, with some field work requiring overnight stays. The candidate must be able to work in the field 25% of the time.
  • Candidate must be available for travel to project locations within the United States.  Travel is estimated to be less than 25% of time worked.
