The Program

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) Humanitarian Logistics Capability (HLC) facilitates the timely, effective, and flexible delivery of the Australian Government’s humanitarian assistance and emergency relief program globally.

The program delivers responsive humanitarian supply chain solutions and supports emergency response efforts across the Indo-Pacific, helping save lives, alleviate suffering, and enhance human dignity during crises.

The opportunity

The Humanitarian Logistics Capability (HLC), based in Brisbane, is central to Australia’s rapid and coordinated humanitarian response across the Indo-Pacific. As the Communications & Public Diplomacy Adviser, you will play a critical role in shaping how Australia’s humanitarian efforts are communicated, understood, and valued.

You will lead the development and implementation of an integrated communications and public diplomacy strategy, ensuring all program communications are strategic, consistent, and aligned with DFAT priorities. Working closely with DFAT, program teams, and partners, you will drive high-quality storytelling, media engagement, and digital communications that amplify the program’s reach and impact.

This is a unique opportunity to combine strategic communications, stakeholder engagement, and creative storytelling in a high-impact humanitarian setting.

Key responsibilities

Lead the development and delivery of a dynamic communications and public diplomacy strategy that brings the program’s impact to life. You will oversee compelling storytelling across multimedia platforms, translate insights into engaging narratives, and drive meaningful engagement with DFAT, partners, and the broader humanitarian sector. From high-profile events and digital campaigns to media and crisis communications, you’ll ensure all outputs are culturally appropriate, compliant, and aligned with Australian Aid priorities, while using data and evidence to continuously strengthen reach, impact, and learning.

About You

You are a strategic and creative communications professional with a passion for humanitarian or development work. You bring strong storytelling capability and are confident working in complex, fast-paced environments with diverse stakeholders.

You are proactive, collaborative, and highly organised, with the ability to balance strategic leadership and hands-on delivery.

  • Demonstrated experience leading strategic communications for donor-funded or international development programs.
  • Strong experience developing and implementing communications strategies, campaigns, and high-quality content across multiple platforms.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills, including multimedia content development.
  • Experience working in cross-cultural environments and with diverse stakeholders.
