Tetra Tech is adding an experienced Civil Construction Inspector / Assistant Construction Manager to our Municipal/Government Infrastructure team based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This role supports the successful delivery of municipal and public infrastructure construction projects by providing on-site inspection and in-office documentation and coordination with contractors, project teams, and clients to ensure work is completed in compliance with project plans and specifications.

Position Summary:
The Civil Construction Inspector / Assistant Construction Manager provides field oversight and inspection services for municipal infrastructure and civil construction projects, as well as office support for project administration. The role ensures contractor compliance with project plans, specifications, and safety requirements, documents construction activities, and coordinates with contractors and clients throughout the construction process.

Essential Job Functions:

    • Observe and document daily construction activities and monitor compliance with project plans, specifications, and contract documents.
    • Maintain accurate project documentation including daily reports, project photographs, test reports, and construction record drawings.
    • Track and document construction quantities and assist in preparing deficiency or punch lists.
    • Act as Construction Manager representative regarding project progress and field issues.
    • Communicate regularly with contractors to review progress and address field-related concerns.
    • Coordinate with clients and contractors throughout project execution and keep clients informed of activities that may impact operations.
    • Coordinate with third-party materials testing firms for construction testing such as soils, concrete, bituminous materials, and bearing tests.
    • Promote and monitor site safety practices and report safety concerns to contractors and the client.
    • Develop Work Change Directives, Field Orders, Proposal Requests, and Change Orders.
    • Perform construction administration tasks as needed, including preparing meeting agendas and minutes for preconstruction conferences, progress meetings, and client meetings, and occasionally supervising field staff.

Required Qualifications:
    • Minimum of 2 years of experience in municipal or public infrastructure construction.
    • Some experience with site civil construction, including yard piping, structural concrete, mechanical systems, HVAC, electrical, and instrumentation.
    • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
    • Experience using Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel and basic office equipment.
    • Ability to work extended or irregular hours as project needs require.
    • Strong interest in building a career in construction contract administration and inspection consulting.
    • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
    • Experience serving as Resident Project Representative (RPR) or construction inspector on municipal infrastructure projects.
    • Familiarity with public-sector construction standards and specifications (e.g., MDOT or local municipal standards).
    • Experience working with construction documentation or project management systems.

Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to walk and stand for extended periods on active construction sites and uneven terrain.
    • Ability to occasionally climb ladders, navigate trenches, or access elevated construction areas as required.
    • Ability to perform light to moderate physical activity, including occasional lifting of equipment or materials up to approximately 40–50 pounds.

Work Environment / Environmental Factors:
    • Combination of office-based work and outdoor construction site environments.
    • Exposure to varying weather conditions, uneven terrain, and active construction operations.
    • Moderate noise levels and proximity to heavy equipment and construction activities.
    • Use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.

    • Employment Type: Full-time.
    • Work Schedule: Standard weekday schedule with occasional extended or irregular hours depending on project needs.
    • Travel Requirements: Local or regional travel to project sites may be required.
