Biologist - Botanist/Wetlands – Seattle/Bothell, WA
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Botany, Ecology, or related field, preferably with an emphasis in botany.
- 1 to 3 years of experience preferred.
- A strong background of coursework and/or experience in a natural science (e.g., botany, soils, wetland science, or ecology) and field data collection.
- A strong background of coursework and/or experience in botany and conducting field work is important.
- Must have a minimum of 12 semester hours or technical courses in the area of plant identification, botany, rangeland plants, agriculture, or crop science.
- Staff performing monitoring must be able to identify and key out sagebrush-steppe plant species (and habitats).
- They must also have knowledge of rangeland ecosystems and soils.
- Attention to detail, ability to work independently, willingness to work as part of team, and the ability to stay positive and effective during long days in the field are critical.
- Applicants must be willing to work in sometimes difficult conditions, and often miles from the vehicle. Physical challenges typically encountered may include long off trail hikes, steep slopes, extreme hot and cold conditions, and biological hazards (animals and plants).
- The successful applicant will be safety conscience, and continually assess ways to mitigate hazards.
- Applicant must possess a valid driver’s license and have experience driving a four-wheel drive pickup truck on rough terrain, ability to operate ATVs/UTVs.
- Data management and excellent communication skills are essential.
- Applicant must be able to work with and communicate with a diverse group of co-workers and clients to provide high quality and efficient work products.
- Must have a valid driver license and be able to pass the company DMV check to be a Tetra Tech-qualified driver of corporate/rental vehicles.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug test in compliance with state regulations.
Other Desirable Knowledge and Experience:
- Knowledge and/or experience identifying plants in the field and using dichotomous keys.
- Knowledge and/or experience with botanical surveys and a variety of vegetation sampling techniques such as line-point intercept and other BLM AIM core methods.
- Experience with electronic field data collection devices and software (GPS units, handheld tablets, and Collector for ArcGIS, Survey123).
- Ability to use standard office software (Excel, Word, Outlook, Access, etc.).
- Attention to detail and good communication skills.
- Positive attitude, willingness to learn, and enjoy working outdoors.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
- Wilderness First Aid preferable.
- Knowledge and/or experience with botanical and other biological surveys, wetland and stream identification and delineation and a variety of vegetation sampling techniques such as line-point intercept and other methods.
- Technical writing, study plan compilation, describing baseline conditions, environmental assessment and review is also desirable.
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
- Has ability to perform bending, kneeling, standing, and lifting and carrying objects weighing 35 lbs. and have a tolerance for working in outdoor environments, including prolonged walking or standing on various terrain in a wide range of weather conditions.
- Performs manual labor including excavation with shovels.
- Availability to work extended field rotations (sometimes 10-12 days at a time).
Compensation:
Salary commensurate with experience.
Salary Range: $65,000 - $67,000 yr.
