Blast Engineering

We are seeking a talented Structural Engineering Director or Associate Director who has proven capabilities in delivering blast engineering solutions to lead our blast specialism and develop the business further with new and existing clients.

This role represents a great opportunity for someone to raise their profile within the industry and to further raise the High Performance Buildings brand both internally and externally to Tetra Tech in the field of Protective and Blast Design. You will demonstrate an aptitude for critical thinking and independent judgement, working closely with clients to understand and define their design requirements.  You will deliver quality in every aspect of your work, from technical analysis and design to the development of client relationships and the commercial performance of your projects.

Role description:

• Develop a business plan for the blast and protective design specialism, identify resources and support needed to achieve the plan
• Present plan to senior management and deliver with the support of senior management
• Develop the specialist team in terms of recruitment and/or training of existing staff who wish to develop their skills in the blast and protective design work arena
•  Work collaboratively with other members of multi-disciplinary project teams. You will be required to communicate effectively with all members of the design team and all stakeholders
• Utilise your structural engineering design and modelling knowledge to direct the team and check and review design team outputs
• Direct the team in undertaking the blast engineering design in a wide range of materials
• Assist in the preparation of threat and vulnerability risk assessments for malicious threats
• Develop and deliver risk-based security strategies and protective design and/or blast engineering from concept through detailed design to construction
• Undertake the facade blast engineering design of a wide range of facade systems

Required skills and qualifications:

• A Senior Structural Engineer with a Masters degree in civil/structural engineering  and a strong background in blast and protective design
• Chartered Engineer and a Member or Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers, or an equivalent professional institution
• Already, or able to achieve, a Principal Member grade of the RSES at Category B : Protection against the effects of Blast and have (or are able to achieve) UKSV DV level security clearance
• Relevant professional experience, including experience working on large or technically challenging critical infrastructure or building structures projects

Desirable skills and qualifications:

• Effective technical and project leadership abilities, including a proven ability in the delivery of projects that meet objectives in terms of time, quality, and cost
• Proven working knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice and guidelines
• Experience in blast engineering or a related security discipline is essential
• Able to complete the HMG BPSS Check and be capable of achieving National Security Vetting at the SC/DV level if required for specific projects
• Experience in the design of structures in steel, reinforced concrete, timber and/or masonry in accordance with British Standards and/or Eurocodes
• An understanding of construction methodologies and consideration of buildability issues within the design process for protective and blast designs
