About Our Geo-Environmental Team
Our Geo-Environmental Team is a dynamic group of around 100 specialists spread across 10 offices throughout the UK and Ireland, working across three core disciplines:
- Ground Investigation
- Land Quality & Remediation (including PFAS & EDD services)
- Groundwater & Geothermal
We serve key sectors including Energy, Water, Defence, Nuclear and Property.

The Role
As part of our continued growth in Northern Ireland, we are seeking a Senior or Principal Engineering Geologist to join our Belfast-based Geo-Environmental team.
This role will focus on delivering and growing our ground investigation, land quality and geotechnical services across Northern Ireland. You will play a key role in strengthening our regional capability, developing client relationships and delivering technically robust, commercially successful projects.
Projects will predominantly be located in Northern Ireland, with opportunities to collaborate across Ireland and GB as required.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Delivery
- Design, manage and interpret ground investigations from desk study through to factual and interpretative reporting
- Prepare Phase 1 and Phase 2 assessments and develop robust Conceptual Site Models
- Undertake geotechnical interpretation (GIR) including derivation of geotechnical parameters and engineering recommendations
- Prepare Geotechnical Design Reports (GDR) where required
- Provide advice on foundations, earthworks, slope stability, retaining structures and ground improvement
- Schedule and interpret laboratory testing (geotechnical and contamination)
- Undertake site visits and provide technical oversight of field operations
- Ensure compliance with relevant standards including BS5930, Eurocode 7 and current UK & NI guidance
Project & Commercial Management
- Prepare fee proposals and scopes of work
- Manage project budgets, programme and profitability
- Oversee subcontractors and laboratory providers
- Ensure high standards of health, safety and environmental management
Maintain strong financial control and reporting
At Principal grade, you will:
- Take accountability for financial performance of a portfolio of projects
- Lead pricing strategy and tender submissions in the region
Support forecasting and workload planning
Business Development & Growth
- Develop and maintain strong client relationships across Northern Ireland
- Identify new opportunities across infrastructure, energy, property and public sector markets
- Support framework delivery and regional marketing initiatives
Represent Tetra Tech at industry and client meetings
At Principal grade, you will:
- Lead regional client account relationships
- Play a key role in shaping and delivering our Northern Ireland growth strategy
Support cross-selling of wider Geo-Environmental services
Leadership & Mentoring
- Mentor and support junior team members
- Contribute to technical excellence and quality assurance
Support the development of well-rounded geo-environmental consultants
At Principal grade, you will:
- Provide line management and performance development
- Support Chartership mentoring
- Help build and shape the regional team
About You
You will be experienced in current practice and governing standards for ground risk management, ground investigation and geotechnical design.
Essential
- Degree (and ideally MSc) in Engineering Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering or related discipline
- Substantial experience in engineering geology and geotechnical interpretation
- Strong experience in designing and managing ground investigations
- Excellent report writing skills and technical judgement
- Experience liaising with contractors and clients
- Strong understanding of health, safety and environmental management
Full UK driving licence
For Principal Grade
- Demonstrable track record of winning work and developing client relationships
- Experience leading multidisciplinary projects
- Strong commercial and financial management capability
Ability to mentor and develop junior staff
Desirable
- Chartered status (CGeol, CEng, or working towards)
- Experience working within Northern Ireland regulatory frameworks
- Experience of coal mining risk assessments or grouting specifications
- Experience of water or infrastructure sector geotechnical design
