Proposal Summary:

MSI is pursuing the anticipated Supporting Peace and Stability in South Kivu (SPSSK) Activity. Working in close coordination with USAID/DRC, the activity aims to support peace and stability in South Kivu following the withdrawal of MONUSCO (the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo) peacekeeping troops. 

 

Objectives: 

1.     Identify root causes of conflicts and violence, improve social cohesion, restore inclusive dialogs and strengthen local conflict management and mitigation structures to address disputes peacefully and ensure solutions are identified and implemented by local community actors.

2.     Develop economic alternatives to illegal activities and reinforce community resilience to armed group recruitment.  

3.     Strengthen local governance structures to take on MONUSCO’s responsibilities and build trust between communities and local government stakeholders.

Position Summary: 

The Research Advisor will lead and oversee SPSSK’s research components and ensure the results of the foundational and ongoing analyses are incorporated into the design of SPSSK activities. The ideal candidate will have previous experience working in the DRC and  possess a combination of strong technical, communication, research, and analytical skills with preferred knowledge of governance, social cohesion and community resilience interventions. This position will report to the Chief of Party.

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Lead the development and implementation of SPSSK’s research agenda.
  • Facilitate pause and reflect sessions with key stakeholders and partners for dissemination and analysis of learning, new approaches, and innovations. 
  • Support the identification and development of SPSSK activities in coordination with SPSSK technical staff, including engaging with USAID missions and partners as part of this process.
  • Provide inputs to and feedback on the technical design / soundness of SPSSK activities.
  • Coordinate and synthesize participatory conflict analyses to develop community action plans and social cohesion activity designs with SPSSK partners.

Qualifications: 

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent international certification is required, with studies in technical area(s), such as international development, social cohesion, post-conflict/stabilization, monitoring and evaluation or another relevant field is preferred. 
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience implementing research efforts and/or knowledge management frameworks within development assistance programs/projects, including designing and executing activities and research relevant to the SPSSK scope of work.
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with local organizations, working groups, and government entities.
  • Prior experience with international development programming in the DRC, South Kivu preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to travel throughout South Kivu, as needed.
  • Strong interpersonal, supervision, and written/oral communication skills.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and French required.
